Case Study: Re-measurement of Dryland Salinity Species Trials

Jamax Forest Solutions was commissioned by the Department of Regional NSW to remeasure over 40 trial sites planted in the early 2000s. The objective was to assess long-term tree survival and growth performance across multiple rainfall zones and determine the suitability of various species for commercial and environmental outcomes.

The Challenge

The Department required the remeasurement of 2-hectare species trial plots across private properties in regions west of Tamworth, Dubbo, and Wagga Wagga. These sites, originally planted with six tree species and arranged in 24 replicated plots per location, had not been assessed in more than a decade. Significant tree mortality had occurred, and many sites lacked physical tree numbering. The project called for accurate identification of surviving and dead trees, adherence to original design layouts, and sensitivity to access and landholder engagement issues.

Our Solution

Our team undertook the logistical challenge of accessing over 40 remote sites, spanning from Inverell to Albury. We camped in the field as required, navigated varying terrain, and contacted landholders to gain remeasurement consent. Using Haglöf inventory technology—including the Vertex Laser Geo Hypsometer and DP II Caliper with DPGPSDME—paired with TIMS software, we delivered fast, reliable, and repeatable data across all viable sites. Each tree was assessed against the original design framework to ensure continuity of measurement.

The Result

Jamax successfully remeasured 28 plantation trial sites over 56 days of fieldwork. The detailed inventory provides an up-to-date dataset on species performance under dryland conditions, supporting future policy, environmental planning, and silvicultural decision-making. At time of writing, the Department has not yet processed the data due to internal budget constraints.

Case Study: Expert Witness Reporting – Post-Bushfire Damage Claims

Jamax Forest Solutions was engaged to provide expert forestry evidence in two civil matters following a 2018 bushfire. The cases involved substantial compensation claims for timber losses, vegetation damage, and clearing costs—allegedly caused by the fire. Our independent reporting informed the legal position of the defendant’s insurer.

The Challenge

In 2018, an accidentally lit bushfire spread across several rural properties, prompting compensation claims from neighbouring landholders. Plaintiffs sought damages for lost timber revenue and costs associated with removing hazardous fire-damaged trees. The defendant’s insurer required expert technical evidence to assess the legitimacy and extent of these claims under the Private Native Forestry (PNF) Code.

Our Solution

We conducted site inspections and a full inventory for one of the properties, totalling more than 5,000 hectares across both matters. Our analysis combined ground-based observations with remote sensing and photogrammetry to assess fire intensity and its ecological effects. We considered the regulatory constraints of the PNF Code and applied geospatial analysis to distinguish fire damage from natural decline.

The Result

Our reports, delivered over two six-month investigations, concluded that the plaintiffs had significantly overstated losses. In both cases, drought—rather than bushfire—was identified as the primary cause of tree mortality. The expert evidence provided a clear, scientifically credible basis for defence, helping limit liability and resolve the disputes with confidence.

Case Study: Independent Timber Appraisal – Central NSW Summary Statement

In Central NSW, Jamax Forest Solutions conducted an independent timber appraisal to support a land transaction involving mature native and plantation forest. The client required an accurate, standards-aligned valuation to inform price negotiations and ensure regulatory compliance. Our expert team delivered a detailed assessment that withstood both commercial and legal scrutiny.

The Challenge

A private landowner sought to sell a forested property and needed to understand the commercial value of the standing timber. The potential buyer also required confidence in the vendor’s claims and wanted a professional report to inform their investment decision. The appraisal needed to be objective, accurate and aligned with Australian forest valuation standards.

Our Solution

Our Registered Forestry Professional (RFP 110) led the appraisal, conducting a detailed field inventory and applying ACFA’s national valuation standard. We accounted for species composition, log product grades, harvesting constraints and current market conditions. Drawing on deep local knowledge and valuation expertise, we prepared a clear, defensible report tailored to both vendor and purchaser needs.

The Result

The independent assessment allowed both parties to proceed with clarity and confidence. The vendor was able to factor timber value into their pricing, while the buyer relied on the analysis to support negotiations and satisfy due diligence. Jamax Forest Solutions reaffirmed its position as a trusted, impartial authority in timber valuation across regional NSW.

Case Study: Timber Viability & Appraisal for Property Transactions

Jamax Forest Solutions was engaged to perform independent timber viability assessments for landowners involved in property transactions. With the stakes high—ranging from sale price justification to legal compliance—our team provided expert analysis, valuation and testimony, ensuring buyers and sellers were fully informed and supported by authoritative forestry expertise.

The Challenge

Vendors and purchasers of timbered land required accurate and defensible information about standing timber assets. Some needed formal valuations for compliance with AASB 141 and the Corporations Act 2001, while others sought appraisals to support negotiations or legal proceedings. Ensuring rigour, transparency and market relevance was essential to meet diverse stakeholder needs.

Our Solution

We delivered independent timber appraisals grounded in regulatory standards and market insight. Each assessment considered species mix, forest productivity, silvicultural options and local log product demand. As Registered Forestry Professionals, we conducted all work in line with ACFA’s national valuation standard, tailoring each report to the assignment scope, complexity and intended use.

The Result

Clients received valuation reports that stood up to commercial scrutiny and legal challenge. From informal timber appraisals to formal fair market value assignments, we enabled confident property transactions and dispute resolution. Our ability to deliver accurate, timely and context-specific reports reinforced Jamax’s reputation as a trusted authority in forest valuation.

Case Study: Softwood Harvest & Export Coordination

With a tight delivery window and multiple plantation sites across Lithgow, Oberon, Orange and Bathurst, we coordinated teams, logistics and compliance requirements to meet export deadlines. Each phase demanded precision—from grading and barcoding to containerisation and transport—ensuring quality was maintained throughout the supply chain.

The Challenge

The landowner required expert coordination of a large-scale harvest operation that would maximise returns from softwood plantations across the Bathurst region while meeting export quality standards. We were tasked with managing the end-to-end harvesting and export of 100,000 tonnes of Radiata Pine, ensuring high-grade segregation, compliance and smooth logistics through to international shipping.

Our Solution

Jamax engaged qualified local contractors with proven expertise in quality control, environmental practices and OHS compliance. Radiata Pine logs were harvested and sorted by grade to optimise landowner returns and meet precise export specifications. The logs were measured, tagged, fumigated and loaded into 40’ containers at Kelso before being railed to Port Botany for shipment to Asian markets.

The Result

The project delivered an efficient, compliant and profitable outcome for the landowner, with every stage managed to industry best practice. Strategic log sorting and contractor performance ensured optimal product integrity and export readiness. We strengthened our reputation for reliable, full-scope forest logistics from harvest through to international delivery.
