Diver finds 10,000 year old hidden forest

Posted on 29 January, 2015 at 18:30 Comments comments (0)
A shocked diver has found an incredible 10,000-year-old pre-historic forest under the North Sea and experts believe it could have once stretched as far as Europe. Diver Dawn Watson, 45, discovered the remarkable 'lost forest' when she was diving just 300 metres off the coast of Cley next the Sea, Norfolk.

She found complete oak trees with branches measuring eight metres long under the sea and experts believe they have been hidden off the coast of Norfolk since the Ice Age. The forest is believed to have become exposed following the stormy weather last winter.

Ms Watson, who runs the Marine Conservation Society's survey project said 'It was amazing to find and to think the trees had been lying there completely undiscovered for thousands of years. You certainly don't expect to go out for a quick dive and find a forest.'

'It would have looked like a scene from the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings, which is something we don't get in this country anymore. Geologists are very excited about it, it was a really miraculous find.' It’s now hoped that radio carbon dating will be carried out on the trees to discover exactly how long the forest has been there.

Pulp undies for Christmas?

Posted on 18 December, 2014 at 20:40 Comments comments (0)
Just in time for holiday gift giving, lovers of wood and wood products will enjoy MeUndies, underwear made from Lenzing Modal, a material extracted from the European beech tree.

According to the Lenzing website, the material is CO2 neutral and made using Edelweiss technology, which is based on oxygen-based chemistry. More than half of the beech wood used by Lenzing is from Austrian forests.

Distributed by MeUndies, the beech-based undergarments are offered in both men's and women's styles. According to the company's website, "the low rigidity of the beechwood fibres allow for unparalleled, natural softness", while the cellulosic properties of the fibre "naturally inhibit odour-causing bacterial growth".

A variety of colours and patterns are available. Check out the products at MeUndies.com

There's a couple of jokes about splinters that I could use but I won't. Merry Xmas!

Jamax nominated in the 2014 Telstra Australian Business Awards

Jamax Forest Solutions has been nominated in the prestigious 2014 Telstra Australian Business Awards and is entered in the Micro Business category. Not sure who by but thank you. Mind you, after the 20-30 hours it took to complete the entry, if I ever find ...out, I might turn around and nominate their business next year. All jokes aside, the process does provide a good opportunity to navel gaze at your business, where it's heading and how to improve what you do.

Wood's good for your health

Recent studies, along with evidence emerging from Europe and Asia, suggest that the use of wood indoors lowers stress reactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. This is associated with lower blood pressure, lower heart-rate, lower psychological stress, lower susceptibility to illness, and a better ability to focus attention.

The reason for this effect is biophilia, the innate attraction of humans to life and life-like processes. Simply being in the built environment produces a low level of stress since urban living is relatively new on an evolutionary scale. Canadians spend 88% of their time indoors, so finding ways to reduce this stress is important. In addition to greater use of natural daylight, access to views of nature, and the introduction of plants, architects and designers are specifying more wood in public spaces.

One recent study that supports this theory was conducted by the University of British Columbia and FPInnovations. For details about this study click here.

Timber appraisal/valuations

Timber is a valuable and often overlooked asset on timbered properties.

Whether buying or selling a timbered property, you need to know just what it is you are buying or selling and how much it is worth. In some cases, the timber can be worth more than the value of the land.

A detailed knowledge of forestry and the timber market is essential in understanding how the value of the timber contributes to the overall value of a timbered property.

Jamax Forest Solutions provides:

  • a professional timber appraisal service to industry standards,
  • comprehensive appraisal report with complete log pricing profile for local timber customers from each property,
  • fast turnaround times,
  • competitive pricing, and;
  • servicing NSW and southern QLD.

A brochure outlining the benefits of Jamax Forest Solutions timber appraisal service, a sample appraisal report (with complete pricing profile for all log products to local customers) and Jamax Forest Solution’s Log Product Specifications can be downloaded from the Timber appraisal/valuationspage on our website.

Have you got any power poles on your property and what are they worth if you do?

Posted on 17 June, 2012 at 21:18 Comments comments (49)
Now is the time to check if any of the trees on your property are capable of making it as a pole! With the Feds and NSW Governments pointing the finger at each other over increasing power bills, focus has moved squarely onto the need to replace a lot of the State's aging power poles. As a result of the expected spike in demand, pole producers, like Koppers, are chasing supplies of poles.

So, if want to log your property and you think you have enough trees capable of making a pole, contact Jamax. We can assess the viability of harvesting your property for poles, arrange and manage the operation and get you the best return for your logs!
